Cole Hoffer - EE47 Final Project - "The Sleeper"

 

 

The Project

 

For my final project, I created an MP3 Device that plays when you are trying to sleep. It does this by having a 2 foot long FSR that runs the entire length of the pillow. Once the FSR senses force (aka the users head), it starts the audio playback, making it easier for the user to sleep. When removing force, or lifting your head, the music will keep playing for about 10 seconds. This accounts for situations such as getting up to yawn or switch positions. This makes the overall playback smoother as the music is not chopped up every time you switch your head from left to right. The sensor is the only part of the project inside the actual pillow, which means it is unnoticeable to anyone trying to sleep on it. The rest of the components are housed outside the pillow for comfort purposes.

Design Point of View

 

This project is meant for those who need/use music to help them fall asleep. Most people who already listen when sleeping face problems such as headphones stabbing peoples ears when they turn over, or accidentally rolling on the volume control, which leads to you being waken up to AC/DC's Thunderstruck going full blast at 2 in the morning (actually not as bad as it sounds). This project is designed to alleviate those problems as it involves no wires in your blankets and no controls to mess with in your sleep. The project is designed for people who need to simply lay down, listen to music, and go to sleep.

Conclusion and Future

 

As a whole, I feel that this project was a success because it performed its useful functions perfectly. If you want to go to sleep, you lay down, the music plays, and your off to bed. The biggest issues I had with this project was attempting to make it bluetooth enabled. My original plan was to have the pillow and MP3 player connected via connected HC-05 bluetooth modules. Unfortunately, I was unable to get the two connected via Master and Slave, thus making their connection useless for the project. With five days to go, I felt it was best to cut my losses and on creating a project that will manage to perform all the tasks the original idea presented. In the future I would definately want to try to get the bluetooth working, as it means I could separate the pillow and MP3 player. I would also like to think of a better way to attach the sensor to the pillow, so it wasn't being held together by electrical tape.

 

All in all, it was an awesome project to work on and I had tons of fun.

We got such joy reading your project documents, especially you made every part quite clear and put your codes into boxes.

We love your design, making “the Sleeper”, an interactive pillow MP3. It does address the problems such as headphones stabbing people’s ears when they’re sleeping and turning over while listening to music, or accidentally rolling on the volume control as you say.

You are very good at sketching/prototyping/coding. We like your Verplank Diagram, paper prototype and state diagram. They clearly explain your design. The codes you wrote are pretty good in commenting. You made your codes quite portable and readable for others.

We’re impressed by the way you executed your plan. You have prioritized your work and cut out the not-working Bluetooth part. We like you choice of using flexible wires and your design of keeping the pillow comfortable.

Overall, great work this quarter and we’re glad that you had fun.
